This photograph appeared in an album compiled by W.E.B. Du Bois titled "Negro life in Georgia, U.S.A." The album later became part of the Daniel Murray Collection at the Library of Congress.

Studio portraiture held particular significance in Black communities at the end of the nineteenth century, when most published images of African Americans took the form of caricature. Sitting for a formal portrait was a deliberate assertion of dignity and standing.

The photograph is now preserved as part of the Library of Congress collections and was exhibited in "American Treasures at the Library of Congress" in 2005. The original album is held with other materials under the same collection number, with copy prints and microfilm available for reference use.
