Photo by Kartamyshev, Tomsk. Inscribed in Russian on verso: In memory of my encounter with Mr. Kennan from Aleksandr Yagodkin, Tomsk, 5 February 1886. Transfer; Manuscript Division (George Kennan Papers); 1973; (DLC/PP-1973:080). Forms part of: George Kennan Papers.

This half-length portrait was photographed by Kartamyshev in Tomsk in 1880. The subject, Aleksandr Yagodkin, inscribed the verso six years later with a note in Russian indicating he gave the photograph to George Kennan as a memento of their meeting in Tomsk on 5 February 1886.

The photograph was later transferred to the Library of Congress from the Manuscript Division's George Kennan Papers in 1973. No other details about Yagodkin, the nature of his encounter with Kennan, or the circumstances of the portrait sitting are recorded.
