About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed a woman identified as Mme. André in his studio in 1924. The negative was preserved on safety film, a more stable medium than earlier nitrate stock.
Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style and maintained a studio in New York during this period, having relocated from San Francisco in 1911. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio. The collection includes several thousand studio portraits alongside his other photographic work.
The record provides no information about the sitter beyond her name and the date of the sitting.
