Historical portrait of Arthur J. Crose, a World War I soldier from Tulare County, California, photographed in 1914. Public domain historical photograph.

Arthur J. Crose was a World War I soldier from Tulare County. The record dates the portrait to 1914, though the United States did not enter the war until April 1917.

Tulare County lies in California's San Joaquin Valley, a farming region that had been settled heavily in the late nineteenth century and relied on irrigated agriculture. The county library maintains a large local history photograph collection focused on ordinary residents rather than public figures.

Studios photographed many enlistees in uniform before they left for service. These portraits were often made so that a copy could remain at home with family. For many young men, such a photograph was the only formal portrait they ever sat for. County historical collections across the United States hold thousands of these images as a result.

The photograph is held by the Internet Archive through California Revealed, a statewide programme that digitises material from California libraries, archives, museums and historical societies.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
