Public domain historical portrait of Arthur Lee Breckenridge from Tulare County, California during World War I era, circa 1914. Military service photograph.

Arthur Lee Breckenridge, a Tulare County resident, sat for this military portrait sometime between 1914 and 1918. The photograph appears to have been made during the First World War era, though the United States did not enter the conflict until April 1917.

Local photographic studios across the country took many such portraits once men began enlisting. Families often commissioned them so a copy could remain at home while the serviceman was away. For many young men, this was the only formal photograph they would ever have taken.

Tulare County lies in California's San Joaquin Valley, a farming region that grew rapidly in the late nineteenth century through irrigated agriculture. The county library maintains a substantial local history photograph collection focused on ordinary residents rather than prominent figures.

The photographer's name was not recorded.
