About this photograph
A glass-plate negative from Arnold Genthe's studio, capturing the writer Gertrude Atherton in 1906.
Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style and maintained a San Francisco studio from 1896 to 1911 before relocating to New York. This portrait comes from his California years. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio, including several thousand studio portraits alongside extensive documentation of San Francisco's Chinatown, dance photography, and autochromes.
The original 5 x 7 inch negative is now part of that collection. The record identifies the sitter only by name and the year of sitting, without additional biographical context.
