Forms part of a group of field materials documenting Aurora Calderon performing unaccompanied Spanish songs from Puerto Rico on April 10, 1939, collected by Sidney Robertson Cowell in Oakland, California.

This photograph documents Aurora Calderon, who sang unaccompanied Spanish songs from Puerto Rico for the W.P.A. California Folk Music Project on April 10, 1939, in Oakland, California. Sidney Robertson Cowell recorded and photographed the performance as part of her fieldwork.

The California Folk Music Project, which Cowell directed and concentrated between 1938 and 1940, recorded and photographed traditional musicians across Northern California. Cowell deliberately worked across the state's immigrant communities rather than focusing on a single tradition.

The portrait forms part of a group of field materials from Calderon's recording session. The photographs and recordings are held by the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
