1 photograph : print ; sheet 164 x 107 mm, mount 137 x 99 mm (cabinet card format) | Photograph shows identified soldier who was wounded on July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and lost his leg.

William Wade Dudley served in Company B of the 19th Indiana Infantry Regiment, a unit of the Iron Brigade, and later in the Veteran Reserve Corps. This photograph was taken in 1864, the year following his wounding at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863, an injury that resulted in the loss of his leg.

The cabinet card format and studio setting were typical of Civil War era portraiture. Soldiers on both sides commonly sat for photographs before deploying, leaving images with family, though many also posed after surviving wounds or being mustered out. Exposure times made action photography impossible, so the war's visual record consists almost entirely of portraits, camp scenes, and battlefield aftermath.

Dudley wears his uniform and holds the rank of brigadier general, though the record does not indicate when he received that rank.
