Historical portrait of Charley Crose from Tulare County, California, circa 1914 during World War I era. Public-domain archival photograph from Internet Archive.

The archive records a portrait of Charley Crose from Tulare County during the First World War period.

Tulare County lies in California's San Joaquin Valley, an irrigated farming region. The county library maintains a local history photograph collection documenting ordinary residents rather than public figures.

The United States entered the war in April 1917. After that, local photographic studios photographed enlistees in uniform before they departed, often creating the only formal portrait a young man ever had made. Many families kept copies at home.

The record dates the portrait broadly to the years 1914 through 1918, though American involvement came only in the latter half of that span. The photographer is not identified.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
