Public-domain historical photograph of Chester Raymond Buckman, a World War I soldier from Tulare County, California, taken in 1914.

The archive catalogues this photograph as taken in 1914, which falls before the United States entered the First World War in April 1917. The date range given runs through 1918.

Chester Raymond Buckman was a soldier from Tulare County during the war years. Tulare County lies in California's San Joaquin Valley, a farming region built on irrigated agriculture and settled mainly in the late nineteenth century.

Local studios photographed many enlistees in uniform before they departed. These portraits were often the only formal photograph a young man ever sat for, and copies were made so families could keep one at home while the soldier was away.

The county library maintains a local history photograph collection focused on ordinary residents, families, schools and businesses rather than public figures. This photograph forms part of that collection. The photographer is not recorded.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
