John P. Funk served in the 43rd Tennessee Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. By 1920, when this portrait was made, he wore the United Confederate Veterans medal and a chaplain's cross pin.

The photograph was created by W. G. Thuss.

The record does not indicate where Funk was from, what role he held during the war, or what he did afterward. The chaplain's cross suggests some connection to religious service, though whether during the war or in his later life with the veterans' organization is not specified.

Like many surviving veterans photographed in old age, Funk chose to wear his regalia rather than wartime uniform. The image belongs to a broader tradition of commemorative veteran portraiture that became common decades after the conflict ended, as former soldiers gathered at reunions and memorial events in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
