Historical portrait of Clarence Perkins, a serviceman from Tulare County during the First World War.
The photograph is dated to the period between 1914 and 1918. The United States entered the war in April 1917, after which local photographic studios photographed enlistees in uniform before they departed for service. These portraits were often made so families could keep a copy at home, and for many young men they were the only formal photograph ever taken.
Tulare County lies in California's San Joaquin Valley, a farming region that relied on irrigated agriculture and saw significant settlement in the late nineteenth century. The county library maintains a substantial local history photograph collection focused on ordinary residents rather than prominent figures.
