Forms part of a group of field materials documenting Cruz Losada performing Spanish songs from Puerto Rico on April 10, 1939, collected by Sidney Robertson Cowell in Oakland, California.

This portrait was made during a recording session on April 10, 1939, in Oakland, California. Cruz Losada performed Spanish songs from Puerto Rico for the W.P.A. California Folk Music Project that day.

Sidney Robertson Cowell directed the project and made this photograph. Between 1938 and 1940, Cowell recorded and photographed traditional musicians across Northern California, deliberately working with the state's immigrant communities rather than focusing on a single tradition. The project's portraits include Armenian, Icelandic, Italian, Portuguese, Mexican, Irish, and Serbian names.

The photograph and the recordings from this session are held by the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
