1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed Maynard Dixon in 1906, producing this glass plate negative. Genthe maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911, working in the soft-focus pictorialist style.

The negative is a copy portrait photograph, meaning Genthe reproduced an existing portrait rather than photographing Dixon directly from life. The 5 by 7 inch glass plate was a standard format for studio work of the period.

This negative forms part of a collection of roughly 20,000 items the Library of Congress acquired from Genthe's unclaimed studio after his death in 1942. Alongside several thousand studio portraits like this one, the archive includes over 400 images of San Francisco's Chinatown, hundreds of dance photographs, and around 500 autochromes.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
