Public domain historical photograph of Earl Pogue, a resident of Visalia, California, taken circa 1888 by photographer E. M. Davidson.

This portrait shows Earl Pogue, photographed in Visalia, California around 1888 by E. M. Davidson.

Visalia sits in Tulare County, part of California's San Joaquin Valley. The valley saw heavy settlement in the late nineteenth century as farming took hold, made possible by irrigation. Most photographs surviving from this period show ordinary residents rather than public figures, and this portrait of Pogue belongs to that local tradition.

The photograph comes from Tulare County Library's local history collection and was digitised through California Revealed, a statewide programme that makes material from California libraries, archives, museums and historical societies publicly available online.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
