Historical Portrait
Elias, Mrs., portrait photograph

Archive record
1 negative : nitrate ; 5 x 7 in.
About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed an unidentified woman, Mrs. Elias, in 1920. The portrait survives as a 5 x 7 inch nitrate negative now held by the Library of Congress.
Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style and maintained a New York studio from 1911 into the 1940s, having previously operated in San Francisco. The Library of Congress acquired roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio after his death in 1942.
The record provides no further information about the sitter beyond her married title and surname. The negative itself offers a fragment of one woman's contact with a commercial portrait studio in the early 1920s, but her identity and the circumstances of the sitting remain undocumented.
Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
