This photograph shows Fred Rosser of Tulare County, California, and was made between 1914 and 1918.

The United States entered the First World War in April 1917. Studios throughout the country photographed men in uniform before they departed, often producing the only formal portrait a young man would ever sit for. Families kept copies at home.

Tulare County lies in the San Joaquin Valley, a farming region settled in the later nineteenth century and reliant on irrigated agriculture. The county library maintains a local history photograph collection documenting ordinary residents rather than public figures.
