Public domain historical portrait of Garabet Danielian from Churchill precinct (Yettem), Tulare County, California, circa 1914 during World War I era.

Garabet Danielian of Churchill precinct, also known as Yettem, in Tulare County during the First World War era.

The portrait was made sometime between 1914 and 1918. The United States entered the war in April 1917, and studios photographed many enlistees in uniform before they left for service. Copies often stayed at home with families.

The subject's name suggests he or his family arrived during the great wave of immigration that brought some 20 million people to the United States between roughly 1880 and 1920. Studio portraits were made on both sides of that journey, left with relatives at home or posted back as proof of safe arrival and employment.

Tulare County sits in California's San Joaquin Valley, a farming region that grew rapidly in the later nineteenth century through irrigated agriculture. The county library holds a large local history photograph collection documenting ordinary residents rather than public figures.

The photographer is unidentified.
