Group of men sitting in front of a building at Hall Ranch

1900Public Domain

Photograph of a group of men enjoying a Sunday afternoon at the Hall family ranch in La Cañada. Thomas S. Hall (1826-1898) established a ranch near Palm Drive and Fairmont Avenue in 1874, where he cultivated fruit and vineyards, had a winery, and kept bees. This image is from the collection of Charles Pate (1874-1961), an early pioneer that came to the Crescenta-Cañada Valley from England in 1893. He documented life in the region by photographing his experiences as well as by collecting images by local photographers. Much of what is known about the people and places in the valley is due to Pate's imagery and manuscripts. "At the Hall Ranch on a Sunday Afternoon 1900" written in ink on reverse.
