1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed a child from the Horst family in 1906. The portrait was made on a glass plate negative measuring five by seven inches.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. He had established a studio in San Francisco in 1896 and remained there until 1911, when he relocated to New York. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio.

The collection includes several thousand studio portraits alongside other work. This photograph belongs to that body of commissioned portraiture produced during his San Francisco years.
