Portrait of Howard Albert Hilton from Sultana precinct, Tulare County, California, taken in 1914. Public-domain historical photograph from World War I era.

Portrait of Howard Albert Hilton, a resident of the Sultana precinct in Tulare County, photographed in 1914. The date places the image in the years before the United States entered the First World War in April 1917.

Sultana was a farming community in California's San Joaquin Valley, where Tulare County's economy depended on irrigated agriculture. The precinct designation suggests Hilton lived in this rural area of the county.

The photographer is not recorded. The image forms part of Tulare County Library's local history photograph collection, which documents ordinary residents rather than public figures. Once America joined the war, local studios photographed many young men in uniform before they departed for service, often creating the only formal portrait a man would ever sit for. Families kept copies at home.

Whether Hilton later served is not stated by the archive record. The photograph survives as part of a collection digitised through California Revealed, a statewide programme that makes material from California libraries and historical societies publicly available online.
