Public-domain historical portrait of James Horrocks Kilgour from Lemon Cove, Tulare County, California, taken in 1914 during World War I era.

This portrait from the Tulare County Library collection shows James Horrocks Kilgour of Lemon Cove during the First World War period. The date range runs from 1914 through 1918, though the United States did not enter the war until April 1917.

Tulare County lies in California's San Joaquin Valley, a farming region that grew rapidly in the late nineteenth century through irrigated agriculture. The county library maintains a substantial local history photograph collection documenting ordinary residents, families, schools and local businesses rather than prominent figures.

Studios across the country photographed men in uniform before they shipped out, often producing the only formal portrait a young man ever sat for. Many families commissioned these photographs so that a copy could remain at home. Such portraits now fill county historical collections.

The photographer is not recorded. The portrait reached the Internet Archive through California Revealed, a statewide digitisation programme that brings material from California libraries, archives, museums and historical societies into public view.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
