About this photograph
James Stanley Fullard of Sultana in Tulare County sat for this portrait sometime between 1914 and 1918. The photographer is not recorded.
Sultana lay in Tulare County, a farming region in California's San Joaquin Valley that had been settled heavily in the late nineteenth century and depended on irrigated agriculture. The county library now holds a large local history photograph collection documenting ordinary residents rather than public figures.
The United States entered the First World War in April 1917. Selective Service eventually registered around 24 million men. Local studios did steady business photographing enlistees in uniform before they left for service, and many county historical collections are full of these portraits. They were often the only formal photograph a young man ever sat for, made specifically so that a copy could stay at home.
The photograph reached the Internet Archive through California Revealed, a statewide programme that digitises material held by California libraries, archives, museums and historical societies. Items coming through that programme originate from many separate local institutions across the state.
