Forms part of a group of field materials documenting John McCready performing Anglo-American songs on July 31, August 2, and August 5, 1939, collected by Sidney Robertson Cowell in Groveland, Tuolumne County, California.

This portrait forms part of field documentation created when John McCready performed Anglo-American songs for Sidney Robertson Cowell in Groveland, Tuolumne County, during late July and early August 1939. The sessions took place on three dates: July 31, August 2, and August 5.

Cowell directed the W.P.A. California Folk Music Project, which recorded and photographed traditional musicians across Northern California between 1938 and 1940. She worked deliberately across the state's immigrant communities rather than within a single tradition, and the project's collection includes Armenian, Icelandic, Italian, Portuguese, Mexican, Irish, and Serbian names.

The recordings and photographs from the project are now held by the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
