Historical portrait of John Miller, a World War I soldier from Tulare County, California, circa 1914. Public domain photograph from historical archives.

John Miller was a soldier from Tulare County during the First World War. The photograph was taken sometime between 1914 and 1918.

The United States entered the war in April 1917. Local studios photographed enlistees in uniform before they shipped out, and these portraits often became the only formal photograph a young man ever had made. Many families kept a copy at home.

Tulare County lies in California's San Joaquin Valley, a farming region built on irrigated agriculture and settled in the late nineteenth century. The county library maintains a local history photograph collection documenting ordinary residents rather than public figures.

The photographer is not recorded.
