Photograph caption: "Miner, fiddler, and singer, at Columbia, Tuolumne County, California." Forms part of a group of field materials documenting John Stone performing Anglo-American music on August 5 and 6, 1939, collected by Sidney Robertson Cowell in Columbia, Tuolumne County, California.

John Stone was a miner, fiddler, and singer recorded in Columbia, Tuolumne County, California, on August 5 and 6, 1939. This photograph was made during that documentation.

Sidney Robertson Cowell, who made the photograph, directed the W.P.A. California Folk Music Project between 1938 and 1940. The project recorded and photographed traditional musicians across Northern California, working across the state's immigrant communities rather than focusing on a single tradition.

The project's materials, including this photograph and the recordings of Stone's performances, are held by the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
