John Wirt Delivering Oranges in Exeter, California

John Wirt with donkeys delivering oranges in front of Stevens Store in Exeter, Calif. Reputedly the first oranges delivered to Exeter, the oranges were grown on the Joe Osborne ranch in the Yokohl Valley. In the background is the old water works tower. Wirt was a prospector, Civil War veteran, and generally considered a recluse.
