About this photograph
This negative preserves Arnold Genthe's studio portrait of Thomas Kelland, made in 1930. The original 5x7 inch nitrate negative now resides at the Library of Congress.
Genthe maintained a portrait studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911 before relocating to New York, where he continued working into the 1940s. He photographed in the soft-focus pictorialist style throughout his career. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio.
The record gives no information about Kelland himself or the circumstances of the sitting. The collection encompasses several thousand studio portraits alongside Genthe's other work.
Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
