About this photograph
This 1930 photograph shows six Union veterans, all members of Chamberlain Post No. 1 of the Grand Army of the Republic in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. The men are identified as George H. Nelson of Company D, 2nd Vermont Infantry Regiment; Amos Harvey Noyes of Company C, 17th Vermont Infantry Regiment; Harvey S. Powers of Company A, 9th Vermont Infantry Regiment; Winthrop T. Reed of the Third Vermont Battery; Charles A. Heyer of Company C, 8th Vermont Infantry Regiment; and Moody H. Evans of Company B, 3rd Vermont Infantry Regiment.
The Grand Army of the Republic was the fraternal organisation of Union veterans, founded in 1866. Its local posts ran reunions and memorial observances for decades after the war. Members wore distinctive uniforms and badges to encampments and parades, which accounts for the appearance of elderly men in regalia in such late portraits.
By 1930, sixty-five years after the war's end, the surviving veterans were in their eighties and nineties. This photograph likely records some of the last living members of the St. Johnsbury post.
