Historical portrait of Lewis C. Jillson from Dinuba East precinct, Tulare County, California, circa 1914. Public domain WWI-era photograph from archive.

Lewis C. Jillson came from the Dinuba East precinct in Tulare County, a farming region in California's San Joaquin Valley. The photograph dates from the First World War period, most likely after the United States entered the conflict in April 1917.

The portrait belongs to a type common in county historical collections from this era. Local studios regularly photographed enlistees in uniform before they departed, and for many young men these sittings produced the only formal portrait they would ever have. Families often kept copies at home.

The photograph is held by the Tulare County library as part of its local history collection, which documents ordinary residents, families, schools and businesses rather than public figures. It reached the Internet Archive through California Revealed, a statewide digitisation programme that makes material from California libraries, archives, museums and historical societies publicly available.

The creator of the photograph is not recorded.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
