Forms part of a group of field materials documenting Maria Garcia performing unaccompanied Spanish songs from Asturias, Spain on January 18 and 19, 1939, collected by Sidney Robertson Cowell in Monterey, California.

Maria Garcia was photographed in Monterey, California, in January 1939 as part of Sidney Robertson Cowell's documentation of her performances of unaccompanied Spanish songs from Asturias, Spain. The recording sessions took place on January 18 and 19.

Cowell directed the W.P.A. California Folk Music Project between 1938 and 1940, recording and photographing traditional musicians across Northern California. The project deliberately worked across immigrant communities rather than focusing on a single tradition.

The photograph and related field materials are held by the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
