Public domain historical photograph of Maris Logan Lindley from Tulare County, California, taken in 1914 during the World War I era.

This photograph shows Maris Logan Lindley of Tulare County, taken in 1914 according to the archive record, though dated more broadly to the 1914–1918 period when catalogued.

The United States would not enter the First World War until April 1917. Once it did, local photographic studios photographed large numbers of enlistees in uniform before they departed. Many of these portraits were made so that a copy could remain at home. County historical collections across the country now hold substantial numbers of such photographs, often the only formal portrait a young man ever sat for.

Tulare County lies in California's San Joaquin Valley, a farming region that saw heavy settlement in the later nineteenth century and relied on irrigated agriculture. The county library maintains a large local history photograph collection focused on ordinary residents, families, schools and businesses rather than public figures.

The photograph is held by the Internet Archive and carries a California Revealed tag. California Revealed is a statewide digitisation programme that makes material from California libraries, archives, museums and historical societies publicly available. Photographs reaching the archive through this programme come from many separate local institutions across the state.
