1 photographic print : platinum ; 31.0 x 23.7 cm. | Photograph shows portrait of Navajo woman, boy, and man taken at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, Missouri, 1904.

The Library of Congress catalogue describes this platinum print as a portrait of a Navajo woman, boy, and man, photographed by the Gerhard Sisters at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in Missouri in 1904.

The print itself is dated 1905, the year following the exposition. The archive provides no names for the three sitters.

Photographs of Native people from this period were made almost entirely by non-Native photographers working for government surveys, commercial ventures, expositions, or ethnographic projects. The subjects rarely had control over how the resulting images were used or circulated. Catalogue records from the era routinely name the photographer while leaving sitters unidentified or identified only by their nation. When names were not recorded at the time, they are typically irrecoverable.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
