Public domain historical photograph of Oscar Alfred Evans from Orosi North precinct, Tulare County, California, taken in 1914 by White Studio during World War I era.

Oscar Alfred Evans from Orosi North precinct in Tulare County sat for this portrait in 1914. The photograph was made by White Studio.

The United States would not enter the First World War until April 1917, three years after this sitting. Once the country joined the conflict, Selective Service registered around 24 million men. Local studios photographed enlistees in uniform before they left, often producing the only formal portrait a young man ever had made. Many of these images were created so a copy could remain at home.

Tulare County lies in California's San Joaquin Valley, a farming region that saw heavy settlement in the late nineteenth century and relies on irrigated agriculture. The county library maintains a large collection of local history photographs, focusing on ordinary residents rather than public figures.

This record comes from a digitisation project that makes material from California libraries and historical societies publicly accessible. The programme draws from many separate institutions across the state.
