About this photograph
This portrait was made during fieldwork for the W.P.A. California Folk Music Project. Sidney Robertson Cowell, who led the project from 1938 to 1940, traveled across Northern California documenting traditional musicians from the state's immigrant communities. The project recorded and photographed performers of Armenian, Icelandic, Italian, Portuguese, Mexican, Irish, and Serbian backgrounds, among others.
The caption indicates the photograph belongs to a set of materials from sessions with John McCready, who performed Anglo-American songs in Groveland, Tuolumne County, on July 31, August 2, and August 5, 1939. The archive catalogues the subject as Pen McCready.
