Portrait of Ralph Henderson Miller, World War I soldier from Orosi North precinct, Tulare County, California. Public domain historical photograph from 1914.

Ralph Henderson Miller served in the First World War and came from the Orosi North precinct in Tulare County, a farming region in California's San Joaquin Valley.

The United States entered the war in April 1917. The photograph dates from between 1914 and 1918, though the title gives 1914 specifically. Local studios photographed enlistees in uniform before they departed, often producing the only formal portrait a young man ever sat for. Many of these photographs were made so that a copy could remain at home.

The portrait comes from Tulare County Library's local history photograph collection, which documents ordinary residents, families, schools and businesses from the area rather than public figures. The photographer is unknown.
