About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed the opera singer Ernestine Schumann-Heink in 1906. The original was made as a copy portrait, suggesting it reproduced an earlier photograph.
Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. He maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911, then moved to New York and continued working into the 1940s.
The photograph survives as a glass negative measuring five by seven inches, now held by the Library of Congress. The Library acquired roughly 20,000 items from Genthe's unclaimed studio after his death in 1942.
