Public-domain historical portrait of Sidney Newell Gordon from Monson precinct, Tulare County, California, circa 1914 during World War I era.

Sidney Newell Gordon was from Monson precinct in Tulare County, a farming region in California's San Joaquin Valley. The portrait was made during the First World War era, though the United States did not enter the conflict until April 1917.

Local studios photographed many young men in uniform before they left for service. These portraits were often the only formal photograph the subject ever sat for, with copies kept at home by families. The county library's local history collection holds many such images of ordinary residents rather than public figures.

The photograph comes from the Tulare County Library collection and was digitised through California Revealed, a statewide programme making material from California libraries, archives, museums and historical societies publicly available.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
