About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed Mr. Sommer in 1920. The record identifies neither Sommer's first name nor his occupation or relationship to the photographer.
Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. He had maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911 before relocating to New York, where he continued photographing into the 1940s. This portrait dates from his New York period.
The negative is held by the Library of Congress, which acquired approximately 20,000 items from Genthe's unclaimed studio after his death in 1942. That collection includes several thousand studio portraits alongside his other photographic work.
Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
