1 photograph : print ; sheet 17 x 12 cm, mount 14 x 10 cm (cabinet card format) | Photograph shows portrait of Hazel V. Miner, who was born in 1891 and died in 1956 and married Howard R. Jeffrey in 1920, with unidentified veteran identified on photo as "Grandpa."

A cabinet card portrait showing Hazel V. Miner, born in 1891, with an unidentified Civil War veteran labeled on the photograph as "Grandpa." Hazel would later marry Howard R. Jeffrey in 1920 and died in 1956.

The veteran's identity and relationship to the girl remain unknown. By 1900, when this photograph was made, the Civil War lay thirty-five years in the past, and surviving veterans were elderly men. The archive record gives no details about his service or how he was connected to the family.

The photographer was Albert Adams. The cabinet card format, measuring 14 x 10 centimeters with the mounted print slightly larger, was a common studio portrait size of the period.

The photograph captures a generational moment typical of the turn of the century, when the Civil War generation was passing and their grandchildren knew the conflict only through family memory. Hazel appears as a young child of about nine years old, posed formally with the older man for a studio sitting that preserved an image of them together.
