Historical portrait of W. D. Browning from 1916, who served as postmaster and moved the post office to his hardware store. Public-domain photograph.

**W. D. Browning**

This portrait from 1916 shows W. D. Browning, who served as postmaster and moved the post office into his hardware store. The photographer is not identified in the archive record.

The photograph forms part of the Tulare County Library's local history collection. Tulare County sits in California's San Joaquin Valley, a farming region that saw heavy settlement in the late nineteenth century and became dependent on irrigated agriculture. The county library holds a substantial collection of historical photographs documenting ordinary residents, families, schools and businesses rather than prominent figures.

The record reached the Internet Archive through California Revealed, a statewide programme that digitises material from California libraries, archives, museums and historical societies. Because California Revealed brings together photographs from many separate local institutions, the programme name indicates where an image was digitised rather than where it was originally taken.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
