Public domain historical photograph of Ward Evert Brown from Lemon Cove precinct, Tulare County, California, taken in 1914 during World War I era.

Ward Evert Brown was from the Lemon Cove precinct of Tulare County, a farming region in California's San Joaquin Valley. The archive dates this photograph between 1914 and 1918, the World War I era, though the creator is unknown.

The United States entered the war in April 1917. Around 24 million men registered for Selective Service during the conflict, and approximately 4.7 million served. Local studios photographed many enlistees in uniform before they departed. These portraits were often made so that a copy could remain at home, and for many young men they were the only formal photograph ever taken. County historical collections hold large numbers of these wartime portraits as a result.

The photograph is held in the Tulare County library's local history collection. That collection consists largely of ordinary residents, families, schools and businesses rather than public figures. The record reached the Internet Archive through California Revealed, a statewide programme that digitises material from California libraries, archives, museums and historical societies.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
