Public-domain historical portrait of William Riley Halstead, Co. C 316 Ammunition Train, World War I soldier from Orosi, Tulare County, California, 1918.

William Riley Halstead served in Company C, 316th Ammunition Train during the First World War. He came from Orosi in Tulare County, California.

The United States entered the war in April 1917. Studios photographed enlistees in uniform before they left, often producing the only formal portrait a young man ever sat for. Families kept copies at home.

Tulare County sits in California's San Joaquin Valley, a farming region that grew through irrigated agriculture in the late nineteenth century. The county library's local history collection documents ordinary residents rather than public figures.

The archive record dates this portrait to the 1914–1918 period, though the caption specifies 1918. The photographer is unknown.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
