Arnold Genthe established his San Francisco studio in 1896, the same year this photograph was taken. The portrait shows Genthe with an unidentified woman, though the record gives no further details about her identity or their relationship.

The negative is preserved in the Library of Congress collection, which acquired roughly 20,000 items from Genthe's unclaimed studio after his death in 1942. The collection includes several thousand studio portraits alongside his better-known work documenting San Francisco's Chinatown and photographing dancers.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style throughout his four-decade career. He maintained his San Francisco studio until 1911, when he relocated to New York and continued working into the 1940s.
