1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed Messrs. Baumgarten in his studio in 1917. By that year Genthe had relocated from San Francisco to New York, where he maintained a portrait practice. The glass negative entered the Library of Congress with thousands of other items from Genthe's unclaimed studio after his death in 1942.

The record identifies the subjects only as "Messrs. Baumgarten," indicating more than one person with that surname, but provides no further detail about who they were or why they sat for the portrait.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. His archive, numbering roughly 20,000 items, includes several thousand studio portraits alongside documentary work and dance photographs.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
