1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed Major Bastedo in 1917. The image was taken as a glass plate negative measuring five by seven inches.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. He maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911 before relocating to New York, where he continued working into the 1940s. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio.

The archive record does not indicate Bastedo's first name, military branch, or the circumstances of the sitting. The 1917 date places the portrait during the First World War, though the record provides no further details about the subject or the commission.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
