1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

This glass plate negative by Arnold Genthe shows a portrait of children from the Beer family. The photograph was taken during Genthe's final year in San Francisco, before he relocated his studio to New York.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. He maintained a San Francisco studio from 1896 to 1911, then continued his career in New York into the 1940s.

The negative survives as part of a large body of unclaimed work from Genthe's studio. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired roughly 20,000 items from this material, including several thousand studio portraits like this one.
