1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

This glass-plate negative from Arnold Genthe's studio captures a portrait of a woman identified only as Miss Bothine. The photograph was made in 1911, Genthe's final year maintaining his San Francisco studio before relocating to New York.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style and operated the San Francisco studio from 1896 until this year. The negative is now part of a collection of roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio, acquired by the Library of Congress after his death in 1942.

The archive record provides no further information about the sitter, her reason for commissioning the portrait, or the circumstances of the session. The formal "Miss" suggests she was unmarried at the time, but details of her identity and background remain unknown.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
