1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

This glass plate negative from Arnold Genthe's studio preserves a portrait of a woman identified only as Miss Bothine. The photograph was made in 1911, Genthe's final year operating in San Francisco before relocating his practice to New York.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style throughout his career, which ran from the 1890s into the 1940s. After his death in 1942, his studio contents went unclaimed. The Library of Congress acquired roughly 20,000 items from that studio, forming the collection in which this negative now resides.

The archive holds several thousand studio portraits alongside Genthe's better-known documentary work. Beyond the name and year, the record offers no information about the sitter or the circumstances of the sitting.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
