About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed the Cella family in 1935. The negative is held by the Library of Congress as part of Genthe's collection.
Genthe maintained a studio in New York during this period, having relocated there in 1911 after working in San Francisco since 1896. He practiced soft-focus pictorialist photography throughout his career, which spanned four decades until his death in 1942.
The Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from Genthe's unclaimed studio after he died. The archive includes several thousand studio portraits alongside extensive documentary work. Beyond portraits like this one, the collection contains over 400 photographs of San Francisco's Chinatown, hundreds of dance photographs, and around 500 autochromes.
This safety negative measures 5 by 7 inches. The record identifies the subjects as the family of Christian Cella but provides no further information about them.
